Clinical Trial and Research

StaffFounded in 1986, the Cornell Clinical Trials Unit (CCTU) has conducted landmark studies resulting in effective therapies for HIV - from AZT to protease inhibitors - as well as for the treatment and prevention of opportunistic infections. It is located in both clinics of the Center for Special Studies. Functioning as a community-based organization, the CCTU continually works to serve a patient population that reflects the face of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in New York City. We are dedicated to improving the treatments and the standards of care for HIV patients through high-quality clinical research.

International Treatment and Education - The Starfish Project

The Starfish Project is the international HIV/AIDS initiative of the Center for Special Studies. The project began as a drug salvage program, collecting unused HIV medications for use in settings without access to antiretroviral (ARV) treatment. Focused in Nigeria, this effort has grown into a comprehensive partnership between U.S. and Nigerian health care professionals to provide multidisciplinary care - including ARV therapy - to HIV+ individuals. This goal is achieved through provider education, contribution of diagnostic equipment, physical infrastructure support, and the HIV medications themselves.

Currently, over eighty patients are being supported on free ARV therapy.

It supports continuing education through on-site follow-up and ongoing communications about patient care. By strengthening this knowledge base, the Starfish Project is helping dedicated HIV/AIDS practitioners who will lead in their country's fight against the AIDS crisis.
